But I cannot resist one comment. It is unusual when a distinguished scholar in his 80s dies peacefully, a man acknowledged throughout the world not only as the father of Indian anthropology, but in the words of one of my colleagues "the world's greatest anthropologist", a man who has been intellectual father, teacher, guide, and as James Manor put it, "my only guru" to so many, a man whose life has brought him honors from every corner of the world it is unusual, I say, to feel that he died prematurely.
